Pipeband

A brief history

After the end of World War 2 , the Arbroath Royal British Legion Pipe Band was formed, it was made up of ex-forces personnel who had been inspired by the pipes during the war. It was run more as a fun band than a serious competition band but the members enjoyed their playing. The band wore the Royal Stewart tartan complete with Plaids, Feather bonnets and spats.

The 3rd Arbroath Company Boys Brigade went to Derby for their summer camp where it was decided that the BB should form an adult pipe band.  It was decided to name the band The Aberbrothock Pipe Band. The band was formed in the late 1960's but it was a few years before the dream was to materialise and it took until 1973 before the band could afford uniforms. The pipers wore Royal Stewart kilts and the drummers Black watch tartan; the Pipe Major of the new Aberbrothock was Jim Whitton.

In 1975 there were still two pipe bands in Arbroath, the Aberbrothock and the Arbroath Royal British Legion, and neither band was doing very well, so it was decided that one Pipe band was enough for Arbroath, so the Aberbrothock Pipe Band amalgamated with the Arbroath Branch Royal British Legion Scotland Pipe Band and the band retained the Legion name. We at the Arbroath Branch are very proud of our Pipe band and support them to the best of our ability. If you have any interest in learning to play the Pipes or Drums, especially the young members of the community please drop in on their training nights on Mondays or Thursdays between 7.00pm and 9.00pm. Please be interested before you turn up, we don't want any time wasters. Thank you.
